Share your organ donor status on Facebook to help save lives

Today, Facebook announced a new feature that could help save people's lives: The ability to add your organ donor status on your Timeline in order to inspire others to sign up as donors, too. Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg told ABC News that he first formulated the idea over dinner with his med student girlfriend, but it was his friendship with the late Apple founder Steve Jobs — who passed away from pancreatic cancer in 2011 — that motivated him to launch the project.
Adding your organ donor status is pretty simple: Click Life Event at the top of your Timeline, go to Health and Wellness, select Organ Donor, and input your details. You can even share the story behind what inspired you to sign up. To be clear, putting a status on your Timeline doesn't automatically make you a donor; you first have to register to make it official. Check out the social network's resources to get you started.
According to the National Foundation for Transplants, there are more than 114,000 individuals in the organ transplant waiting list in the United States alone. Roughly 18 people in the country die everyday due to the lack of donors. Facebook's organ donor status feature is now available in the United States and the United Kingdom, and will be rolled out to other countries in the future. The social network also has other life-saving features in place, including sets of suicide prevention and anti-cyberbullying tools.
